FATA University Darra Adamkhel, FATA, Pakistan

A university proposed to be established in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan is nearly to materialize in the near future. The approval of the university came when Ex-President Mr. Asif Ali Zardari signed / approved the FATA University Regulation 2013 on May 20th, 2013. However, there are political motives (of the representatives of the area) involved for gaining credit for establishment of the said university, which have caused great hindrance even in the nomination of a mutually consented candidate as a Vice Chancellor for the university. Twice the appointments of two different candidates as Vice Chancellors were rolled back by the Government. But the encouraging factor is that funds have been earmarked for the project (installation of the necessary infrastructure) and a late but mutual consensus has been reached that the university will be situated at Akhurwal in Darra Adamkhel (adjacent to Peshawar). An area of 266 Kanals of land has been acquired for the said purpose.

The idea of FATA University began when the Prime Minister of Pakistan issued a directive to the relevant authorities back in 2008 regarding developing a framework for establishment of the university. Once the Higher Education Commission in 2010, even had declared that the classes of the university would be started within a month in a temporary campus. But, the poor law and order situation and diverting of funds for the fight against terrorism (from the Public Sector Development Programs) in the area has been the primary cause of such directives and agreements not being materialized.

NTS holds NAT for Bachelor Admissions and GAT for Post-Graduate Admissions in Pakistani Universities

NTS has been denounced as the test conducting body for admissions to Pakistani Universities graduate and postgraduate programs. The denouncement came as a directive from the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad to the Pakistani Universities. For details click here.

The National Testing Service (NTS) conducts National Aptitude Test (NAT) of the students willing to take admission in any Bachelor program of the NAT associated universities of Pakistan. This responsibility has been given to NTS by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Islamabad. The NAT associated universities are those which have opted to accept NAT scores in lieu of admission test scores, and thus they do not conduct their admission tests separately. NAT is therefore meant to exempt the process of conducting Entry Test by each university every time the admissions are announced (since each university following semester system offers admissions twice a year). Moreover, in this way the students are at ease of not having to appear in the admissions test of each and every university they wish to apply in. This certainly saves the cost and time of applying for admission tests in various universities separately. The test (NAT) is conducted for particular degree programs offered by the NAT associated universities. Passing NAT does not guarantee that one would be eligible to take admission in any program of these universities. Rather it is only an alternative of admission test scores, and the universities evaluate the potential students keeping in view other criteria too as per their preferences such as previous academic records etc.

The NTS announces a yearly NAT schedule according to which the test is advertised and held every month. Click here to read the NAT 2014 schedule and be informed when to register yourself for the test. The NTS registration form is available at the NTS website at this link. It is to be noted that no documents except 2 photographs and the paid online bank receipt are required to be sent to NTS for the purpose of registration. After one has registered and appeared in NAT, its result will be valid till the expiry of full 1 year from the date of announcement of NAT result.

Allama Iqbal Open University

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in May 1974 with its main campus at Islamabad while the regional offices are spread all over the country. It is one of the oldest distance learning universities providing lowest cost education open for everybody residing in Pakistan (whether they are Pakistani citizens or foreigners residing in Pakistan). It aims to provide continuing education to job holders and those who cannot leave their homes via its distance learning programs, thus targeting the remote areas of the country in spreading education.

Virtual University of Pakistan

Virtual University of Pakistan is a Public Sector University that was established in 2002 with its Head Office at Lahore. It is the first University in Pakistan equipped with modern technology as the only basis of its entire educational framework, that is to say that there are no campuses that hold classes (with students and teachers in a classroom); rather the whole studying procedure is technology dependent. The quality of education is none less than World-Class at the University. One might think that how could the learning quality be world-class without a proper student-teacher interaction (that is practiced in most of the top quality education imparting institutions world-wide), but would soon agree that the inventions of computer and internet leave no shortfalls when properly managed to develop an infrastructure like that of the Virtual University of Pakistan.
