The Federal Cabinet on 15th July, 2016 has approved a summary sent by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms for enhancement of Maximum Age from 28 to 30 years for being eligible to appear in the Competitive Exams held by Federal Public Service Commission, Islamabad each year. The Minimum Age limit to appear in the CSS Exam is still 21 years (same as earlier).
The Candidates of CSS 2017 onwards are now eligible for appearing in the exams till their Age is 30 years.

Earlier in March 2016, the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms had also sent the same summary but with lesser arguments; and thus the Prime Minister had Rejected the Summary on the grounds that it would create disturbance in the structure of the Civil Services. As reported, the PM House also said that “The increase in the number of academic years from 14 to 16 for a bachelor’s degree is really no justification to enhance the upper age-limit for CSS candidates”.
Public Sentiment regarding increasing the Maximum Age Eligibility for appearing in the Competitive Exams had knocked the doors of the Senate many a times through the Public Petitioning Scheme recently launched by the Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani. Thus the Senate had also recommended the Government for extending the Maximum Age in order to cater experienced Candidates for the Civil Service apart from facilitating those who had been unable to complete their 16 years of schooling within 28 years age due to socio-economic situation of the country.
It may be noted that the Upper Age Limit for the CSS Exam was 30 years prior to year 2000; which was reduced to 28 years by the Government of General Pervez Musharraf in a National Security Council's meeting.
